“Lawrence of Punjab” Docuseries Faces Backlash in Punjab After ZEE5 Release Announcement

The recently released digital docuseries ZEE5 production Lawrence of Punjab—which premiered on the platform on 27 April 2026—has become a flashpoint of controversy in Punjab, India, with widespread backlash from political leaders, families of victims, and residents alarmed by its subject matter.

The series, which explores the life and rise of notorious gang leader Lawrence Bishnoi, has drawn sharp criticism for what opponents say is a potential glorification of organised crime. Bishnoi is a jailed criminal figure linked to multiple high-profile cases, including the murder of popular Punjabi singer Sidhu Moose Wala and other violent incidents. Source

Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring has been at the forefront of the opposition, sending a legal notice to ZEE5 and threatening a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the Punjab and Haryana High Court to block the series’ screening. Warring argues that the series could romanticise criminal conduct, potentially influencing impressionable youth and violating public order standards under Indian IT and media rules.

In his complaints, Warring stated that associating Punjab’s cultural identity with a figure like Bishnoi does disservice to the state’s heritage and values, and that such content may encourage hero-worship of criminals rather than provide neutral insight or critique.

Voices of Victims’ Families

The father of Sidhu Moose Wala, slain in 2022 in an attack linked to the Bishnoi gang, has also publicly called for a ban on the series. He, too, voiced concerns that portraying or dramatizing the life of such a figure could send the wrong message to society and disrespect the memory of victims and their grieving families. Source

Makers’ Defence

Despite the mounting objections, the creators of Lawrence of Punjab and ZEE5 representatives have defended the series, saying it is meant to be a sociological study of how criminal identities are shaped through culture, systems, politics, and media influence—not a celebration of criminality. Producers argue the intent is to examine broader social factors and systemic issues, rather than to glorify illegal behaviour.

Public Reaction

The online discourse surrounding the series has been equally intense. Many social media users and commenters in forums have criticised the premise and framing of the series, with some accusing it of hero-worship or sensationalising crime for entertainment value, and others questioning whether such narratives belong in mainstream media. While reactions vary, there is a clear division between those who see the show as a documentary examination and those who view it as problematic content.

Broader Debate

The controversy highlights ongoing tensions in Indian media and society around the portrayal of crime figures in entertainment. It raises questions about creative freedom versus societal responsibility, the ethics of depicting real criminal figures, and how content platforms balance storytelling with public sensitivities.

As legal proceedings evolve and audiences watch and judge the series for themselves, Lawrence of Punjab stands at the centre of a vigorous debate about crime, culture, and media influence in contemporary India.
