Synopsis :
BackdropThe Eastern states of India suffer from chronic poverty due to many reasons, high population density being one of them. Uneducated and poor, families keep growing in number with barely any source of income and too many hungry mouths to feed.
In the more affluent and prosperous states like Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan etc., a boy child is considered a boon and earns respect for a family. A girl child, however, is often put to death due to norms and beliefs that are still prevalent in rural India, giving rise to one of the world’s highest rates of female infanticide, thus creating a gender imbalance.
A Brief – The “WOMAN FROM THE EAST …Kudessan” depicts the plight of an innocent Indian village girl who is betrayed by her own father – trafficked and sold like an animal. She becomes a stranger in her own motherland – a Kudessan !
Paala Singh, a small farmer from a remote village in Punjab, about 65 yrs old, doesn’t have a son from his first wife. His greed for a son pushes him to sell his cattle and with that money and an unholy intention, purchase “Ganga”, an innocent village girl from Bihar.
The protagonist of “WOMAN FROM THE EAST …Kudessan” belongs to a poor family from Bihar. Her own mother is dead, and she lives with her father and her step-mother. Ganga’s father, a man best defined as a desperate addict, agrees to sell his daughter for a very nominal amount of money. Ganga is uprooted from her natural surroundings and sent off to Punjab where she is called a Kudessan – a Woman from the East!
“WOMAN FROM THE EAST …Kudessan” is a disturbing and heart-wrenching tale of hard-hitting realities in the underbelly of rural India.
This movie is where the movement begins – a movement to protect and pay tribute to all the women across the globe… a movement to bring the harsh realities of cruelty towards women into light… a movement to educate and understand the root of the cause.
This is a story about a woman who is a stranger in her own mother land… She is “WOMAN FROM THE EAST …Kudessan”
It’s not just a movie… but a movement!
