TV and film actor, Pankaj Berry last seen in punjabi film ( Subedaar, 1991) with Gurdas Maan, who is currently being seen portraying the role of ‘Tathacharya’ in SAB TV’s sitcom ‘Tenali Rama’ is all set to do his second Punjabi film, ‘Bingad Di Vahuti’ , the poster of which was released by him in the lockdown. He will be seen playing an old, rich, rude and not sociable man who marries a girl,16 much younger than him. “I am an actor and as such I like exploring different avenues in terms of languages or scripts that allow me to showcase my talents and diversity,” says Pankaj who has also done films in various languages such as,Bhojpuri Rajasthani,Sindhi and English.
This film is a satire based on gender discrimination against women and it tells the story of a young girl’s struggle against forced marriage and for her sexual freedom.
This film is based on the last unpublished work by Sahitya Akademi Award recipient, Dr Charan Dass Sidhu, who was a Punjabi playwright and author.The original play was directed by Veena Sidhu Taneja, Dr C.D. Sidhu’s daughter and it spotlighted the issues and complications faced by Indian women in contemporary society. Particularly, the play addressed the problems faced by the section of rural women who do not have the access to proper education, and are not granted equality and emancipation in their marital and sexual rights.
What captivated Pankaj Berry to the script, in his words was, “One, it’s being done by a friend, two, this is an experimental genre for Punjabi cinema and I do think Punjabi industry is standing at the threshold of change.”
