In a significant development for iPhone users, Apple has agreed to a class-action lawsuit settlement that could see eligible iPhone 6 and 7 users receiving up to $150. The settlement, approved by the B.C. Supreme Court last month, is worth up to $14.4 million.
The class-action lawsuit accused Apple of deliberately providing software updates that slowed down some older iPhone models. The tech giant, however, denies these allegations.
To be eligible for the settlement, you must have been a Canadian resident as of June 15, 2023 (excluding Quebec) who owns or has owned an iPhone 6, 6 Plus, 6s, 6s Plus, SE, 7 and/or 7 Plus device that ran iOS 10.2.1 or later before December 21, 2017. There is a separate ongoing class-action lawsuit for people who live in Quebec.
To submit a claim, eligible users will need to fill out and submit a form by September 2. The form requires your name, mailing address, phone number, email, and 12-alphanumeric-digit device serial number. Only one claim may be submitted per eligible iPhone.
Under the agreement, claimants could be entitled to anywhere between $17.50 and $150, depending on how many people apply. Payment can be received through an email money transfer or a mailed cheque.
While the settlement is not an admission of liability, wrongdoing, or fault on the part of Apple, it does bring some closure to the controversy surrounding the performance of older iPhone models. It also serves as a reminder for tech companies about the importance of transparency and accountability.
