Sonam Kapoor gets emotional at ‘Chauthi Koot’ screening

Neerja star Sonam Kapoor said she was moved by the Punjabi film Chauthi Koot (The Fourth Direction). Kapoor was among many Bollywood celebrities and film enthusiasts who attended a special screening of the National Film Award-winning movie on August 1 in Mumbai.

“I am really moved by Chauthi Koot,” said Kapoor, who couldn’t hold back tears after watching the Gurvinder Singh-directed film, which will release in select cinemas across India on August 5.

“It is an exquisite film and very, very special. I hope a lot of people get to see the film. I loved the film,” she said. “It is about extreme emotions, it is about silence, it is about pain, it is about love, it is about loyalty, it is about angst.”

The screening, hosted by filmmaker and actor Anand Gandhi, was also attended by Rahul Bose, Nandita Das, Vicky Kaushal, Shweta Tripathi, Naveen Kasturia, Navdeep Singh, and Sudhir Mishra. Producer Kartikeya Narayan Singh and director Gurvinder Singh were also present.

“I am a Punjabi guy and my family belongs to small village like it is shown in the film, in Punjab,” said Kaushal. “I have heard a lot of stories from my mother, father about the tensed atmosphere back in 1984. I thought, whatever I had heard, I saw the visuals today.”

Set during the Sikh separatist movement of the 1980s, Chauthi Koot is adapted from two stories written by Waryam Singh Sandhu, called Chauthi Koot and Main Hun Theek Thaak Haan (I’m Fine Now). The film has been shot mostly around Amritsar and Ferozepur in Punjab.

Among other accolades, the film won the best film award in the India Gold section at MAMI 2015 and bagged the National Film Award 2016 for the best feature in Punjabi language.
